The Patient Engagement Research Lab

It is a collaborative team of clinicians and researchers with expertise in patient engagement, health services research, behavioral change, health communication, educational tool development (including mHealth technologies), and the implementation of innovative care delivery strategies. Its mission is to expand access to effective treatments, support well-informed decision-making, promote active patient participation, and improve clinical outcomes.

Through partnerships with healthcare providers, national organizations, and policymakers, the lab translates results from clinical trials and interventions into practical applications — ensuring that patients receive care that enables them to live longer and maintain a high quality of life. Based in surgery and transplant, the lab has a particular focus on increasing transplant referrals and rates of living donation. It also offers methodological support to other clinical departments and hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.

Fundamentally, we innovate and enhance healthcare to better support patients and their care teams.

Health Literacy Media (HLM)

Health Literacy Media (HLM), established in December 2009 as Health Literacy Missouri, is the largest health literacy nonprofit in the U.S. We operate across the nation and internationally. Since inception, the HLM team has created and implemented a unique, in-depth menu of evidence-based health literacy services. We specialize in improving health literacy through clear communication trainings, plain language messaging and design, audience research, content development, and active interventions within underserved communities. Additionally, we have established ourselves as a national leader in the area of visual and digital health literacy communication, and have won numerous national awards for our work in video. HLM is a thought and practice leader as we have worked to infuse health literacy strategies into complex programs and products from other fields – such as our work educating both healthcare providers and families to explore organ transplant and donation.
