A Global Leader in Patient-Reported Outcomes

Dr. Devin Peipert is an internationally recognized leader in health outcomes measurement and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). He currently serves as the 125th Anniversary Chair & Professor of Health Outcomes Measurement at the University of Birmingham, where he is also Deputy Director of the Birmingham Health Partners Centre for Regulatory Science and Innovation and a key member of the Centre for Patient Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR). His work focuses on ensuring that healthcare systems measure what truly matters: the patient’s experience, priorities, and quality of life.

A Longstanding Collaboration with the PE Lab

Dr. Peipert’s connection to the Patient Engagement (PE) Lab began in 2011, when he joined Dr. Amy Waterman’s team at Washington University in St. Louis as a statistician. Drawn by her innovative, patient-centered approach to research, he became deeply involved in the Lab’s work through its transition to UCLA in 2013. Even after moving into faculty roles at Northwestern University and later the University of Birmingham, his collaboration with Dr. Waterman has remained strong. Over more than a decade, their partnership has evolved into a transatlantic collaboration grounded in shared purpose and scientific rigor.

Elevating the Patient Voice in Transplant Care

At the core of Dr. Peipert’s work is a simple but powerful idea: patients must be heard. His research focuses on developing and implementing PRO measures in kidney disease and transplantation tools that capture patients’ perspectives on their health, treatment experiences, and decision-making processes. He believes these insights are essential to making transplant one of medicine’s most precious and limited resources as effective and meaningful as possible. His work aligns seamlessly with the PE Lab’s mission to center care around what matters most to patients.

From Collaboration to Global Impact

Dr. Peipert has contributed to a wide range of PE Lab initiatives, from clinical trial design and delivery to the development of patient-centered outcomes. As the Lab transitions into a formal Center, he is particularly excited about expanding international collaborations, helping align efforts across the U.S. and Europe to develop scalable, evidence-based interventions for transplant patients. His vision is one where innovation is shared globally and where best practices transcend borders to improve care everywhere.

Inspired by Innovation and Purpose

What continues to inspire Dr. Peipert about the PE Lab is its ability to remain forward-thinking while staying grounded in its mission. “The Lab takes advantage of new technologies and opportunities to engage patients,” he notes, “while staying true to its goal of making life better for everyone with kidney disease.” This balance between innovation and impact is what makes the Lab’s work both cutting-edge and deeply meaningful.

Life in England: Family, Exploration, and Tennis

Since relocating from Chicago to England in 2024, Dr. Peipert has embraced a new chapter of life abroad. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring England with his family and immersing himself in local culture. He is also an avid tennis player, taking every opportunity to get on the court. These moments of balance and connection reflect the same values that guide his professional work curiosity, engagement, and appreciation for lived experience.

Setting the Standard for Patient-Centered Innovation

Looking ahead, Dr. Peipert sees the PE Lab continuing to lead the field in aligning transplant care with patients’ real-world needs and experiences. He believes the Lab will remain a model for innovation setting the gold standard for generating high-quality evidence on how patients and living donors make decisions, and how those decisions can be better supported.
