One of the ways we at the Transplant Research and Education Center serve kidney patients is through Explore Transplant, a multi-level consortium of the leading experts in transplant, and a key partner in this endeavor is Health Literacy Media (HLM). In order to get the educational tools we have developed to the people who need it most – the patients – HLM does in-person trainings and workshops with dialysis providers and other professionals caring for people with end stage renal disease (ESRD). To date, HLM has done 125 training sessions. Trainings support discussions about kidney transplant and living donation, to ensure people understand their options and make the best decision for their health.
In July 2018, Health Literacy Education Manager Christina Goalby, M.S.W., presented at the HealthInsight ESRD Alliance Network 18 Annual Quality Conference. There, she shared best practices with dialysis professionals to improve care for ESRD patients and their families. More than 250 dialysis providers, including nephrology nurses, social workers, dietitians, and technicians from the southern California area filled the seats through an hour of lecture, discussion, and activities.
- Barriers that many patients face when thinking about and pursuing kidney transplant, including myths about transplant and donation and why better education is needed
- Evidence-based health literacy strategies to overcome barriers and clearly communicate about transplant with patients and their families
- All about Explore Transplant’s newly revised kidney transplant and living donation education programs
This week, Christina is offering dialysis provider training in Explore Transplant in partnership with Duke Transplant Center. Christina was in Greensboro, NC, on August 21st and she’ll be in Durham, NC, on the 23rd.
